Q355B is a high-strength low-alloy structural steel grade widely used in China. It is one of the most common materials for modern steel structure buildings due to its excellent mechanical properties, weldability, and cost-effectiveness.
It is the successor to the older Q345B grade under the updated Chinese standard GB/T 1591-2018, which aligned Chinese designations more closely with international standards (like the European S355 series).
The name "Q355B" breaks down as follows:
Q: Stands for Yield Strength
355: Indicates the minimum yield strength of the material is 355 Megapascals (MPa) at thicknesses ≤ 16mm. This is the key mechanical property.
B: Denotes the quality grade or impact toughness temperature. Grade B offers good impact toughness at 20°C (0°C in some older standards). Grades A, B, C, D, E offer increasing levels of low-temperature toughness.
Q355B is favored in construction for several reasons:
High Strength: Its minimum yield strength (355 MPa) and tensile strength (470-630 MPa) are significantly higher than mild steel (e.g., Q235). This allows for the design of lighter and stronger structural members (beams, columns), reducing the overall weight and cost of the building.
Good Toughness and Ductility: It can undergo significant deformation before failure, which is a critical safety feature in structures, especially in seismic (earthquake) zones.
Excellent Weldability and Formability: It can be easily welded, cut, drilled, and bent using standard methods without pre-heating in most cases, which simplifies fabrication and construction.
Cost-Effective: Provides an optimal balance between performance and price, making it the go-to choice for a vast range of projects.
Weather Resistance: While not a full-fledged weathering steel, it offers better atmospheric corrosion resistance than carbon steels.
Q355B is the workhorse material for a wide variety of structural components:
Main Frames: Primary columns and beams (often using H-beams, I-beams, and box sections) that form the skeleton of the building.
Secondary Members: Purlins, girts, and bracings that support the walls and roof.
Trusses and Roof Structures: For long-span structures like airport terminals, sports stadiums, and industrial warehouses.
Floors and Decks: As support beams for composite floors.
Bridges and Industrial Plants: While this focuses on buildings, it's also extensively used in these heavy-duty structures.
Q355B is functionally equivalent to many internationally recognized steels, though the exact specifications may vary slightly. This allows for its use in global projects:
European Standard (EN 10025-2): S355JR (The most direct equivalent)
American Standard (ASTM A572): Grade 50 (Yield strength 50 ksi, which equals 345 MPa, is very close to 355 MPa)
Japanese Standard (JIS G 3106): SM490YB
International Standard (ISO 630): HR 355
